New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 176

Profit is good. It is good practically, and it is good morally. Rarely today do we hear such a direct and clear statement or a thorough defense of these facts, but it’s necessary. Our people, especially younger people, need to understand that they’re not just participating in a successful system but also an intrinsically moral one: a fair one that creates opportunity and exchanges even human dignity itself. In this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay invites you to understand the goodness of profit and to start teaching it to others, especially our young people. Join him and take up the charge.

My understanding of what the Socialists and Marxists are against is “capitalism,” not profit. Yes profit does get a bad name, but that’s stupid. To me, “profit” just means production in abundance, or in excess of one’s own immediate needs. One MUST do this for society to survive because not everyone can be equally productive. We in fact hold some members of society out of production (not always to their benefit) on purpose, so children can go to school instead of working in a factory, or old people can get a chance to do something else when they start moving slower.
What various social and political errors have produced is a “capitalist” class, which can “produce wealth” without actually being productive. They loan money to other people who want to be productive, and then demand interest on those loans which can be their main source of income. This sort of life tends to produce some level of immoral behavior. These days there are a lot of “capitalists” who also work for a living. They earn enough to put something aside in a retirement or savings account, which then helps support the capitalist system. I think this is a saner way to be a “capitalist.”
An economy works when most of its members are putting something aside for “kids’ college” or “retirement” or a “dream house” or whatever their goal is. When many people can’t do this, you get popular support for welfare (socialist) measures. A welfare economy is simply not viable because not enough true production is occurring. It naturally veers towards totalitarianism and slavery. Our problem is to keep people productive in the face of all the disincentives to do so. Our problem is the disincentives, which I would guess exist mostly in the form of various types of propaganda.
