One of the allegedly illuminating thinkers on the Woke Right side of things is this character named Paul Gottfried, editor of the curious paleoconservative Chronicles Magazine. Over the last few years, Chronicles has published a number of peculiar essays about Marxism, Leninism, Wokeness, and the likes, including a gem by Gottfried himself from 2023 titled “Marx Was Not Woke.” It’s not just the kind of thing I’m used to having heard from Leftists; it’s almost exactly the same argument. Except Gotffried “isn’t” a Leftist. He’s a creature of the “New Right” who happened to be educated by Herbert Marcuse.
