It’s a very popular trope on the reactionary right that Marxism, Communism, Wokeness, or what-have-you in the world of progressive Leftist excesses is the logical endpoint of liberalism. This is, in my opinion, about as insightful as saying that rust is the logical endpoint of metal, and therefore the cause of the corrosion is the metal itself rather than the failure to maintain a good thing that requires maintenance. I think this is important to understand, so in this episode of my subscribers-only podcast, James Lindsay OnlySubs, I break down the analogy. Blaming liberalism for Communism is like blaming metal for rust. Since that’s dumb, don’t do it.
