When I was in college, I had the good fortune to encounter a Bible verse that I took very seriously. I still think about it to this day. It is Matthew 25:23, which is part of the Parable of the Talents. It and the verse before it read: “(22) The servant who had received the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents. See, I have gained two more.’ (23) His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’” I think about this verse a lot, especially right now in a time when so many young people feel directionless and are needed to step up to build the next generation of American excellence. The question so many of them face is how? The answer is the same as it ever was: start small, build skill perhaps under mentorship, demonstrate it, and patiently grow to a place where more responsibility is something you can take. It’s the exact opposite of the entitlement mindset that plagues so many, and it works. Join me on this episode of my subscribers-only podcast, James Lindsay OnlySubs, as I discuss the relevance of this verse to my life and to our present moment.
